In his article - Long live rock ‘n’ roll, journalist Steven Dalton questions whether rock as a genre is on its way out.  There are some compelling arguments mentioned in the article – its good reading.

As someone who went through college  listening to rock legends from across the decades – (Floyd, The Who and going right up to GNR), I am not surprised.  There has hardly been any “good” 70′s -style rock coming out lately.  Either that, or we are so fixated on the earlier masters that we are not paying any attention to the newer acts.  There have been some notable exceptions of course, such as Linkin’ Park, but not a whole lot more.  And they are certainly not amongs the most popular artists currently.

To quote Paul Gambaccini, veteran BBC commentator on the rock era:

It’s over, in the same way the jazz era is over. That doesn’t mean there will be no more good rock musicians, but rock as a prevailing style is part of music history.

Well, its sad. I hope that we are being too quick to write Rock’s epitaph. Over the years, it has been such a huge part of counter-culture that I wonder what todays teens are growing up to… Hip Hop, Rap?
